Discipline Policies

At Patterson, we believe that all children can be successful learners.  Our discipline policy is designed to encourage students to develop responsibility and good decision making skills.

We believe that all students deserve a school environment in which all members of our school community treat one another with respect and kindness.  We believe that when we make mistakes, it is our goal to help children make better choices in the future.  We believe that an orderly school creates a positive environment for learning.

It is our goal to treat all students fairly.  Consequences for students are based on the offence, disciplinary history, the circumstances of the individual situation, and consideration of education codes and legal standards.  It is vital that parents and school work together to build a positive leaning environment for all students.  Sometimes, these considerations mean that students receive different consequences from others.  We ask for the support of parents as we strive to maintain a safe and orderly school environment for all our children.

RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF STUDENTS

The California State Code of regulations states that every pupil shall attend school punctually and regularly; conform to the regulations of the school; obey promptly all the directions of his/her teacher and others in authority; observe good order and propriety of deportment; be diligent in studies; respectful to his/her teachers and others in authority; kind and courteous to school mates; and refrain from the use of profane and vulgar language.

 

SEVERE CLAUSE

Students may be suspended at any time from school for fighting; using habitual vulgar language or obscenity; possession or use of alcohol, drugs or tobacco; willful destruction of property; overt insubordination; possession of dangerous items; threat to the health and welfare of others, etc.

 

PROVISIONS FOR PARENT CONCERNS (Complaint Procedures)

The staff at Patterson is committed to providing a quality educational program and working together with parents.  We thank our parents for working as partners with us.  If you have any questions or concerns over curriculum, discipline, classroom concerns, or teacher concerns, please use the following procedure (more details on the district complaint process are available in the school office):

 

1.       Contact the individual teacher and set up a meeting to discuss your concerns.

2.       If you have met regarding the specific concerns and do not feel that it was addressed, you may then meet with the teacher and principal together.

 

COMMON AREAS

When students are in common areas, such as the playground, cafeteria, or walkways, the following rules are in effect:

 

Mornings Students will wait in the front of the school until 8:15 a.m., or until a yard duty supervisor arrives to indicate that school grounds are open, at which time they will be released to the playground.  The playground is off limits to students and parents until this time.  Students may visit with friends calmly or read.  Horse play, ball games or shouting are not permitted.

 

Walkways Students are to walk, not run, in walkways.  Students are to remember that classes are in session and the noise level should remain low.  Horseplay is not allowed in these areas.  If a student is sent on an errand or out of class, he or she should have a HALL PASS from the teacher and report directly to his or her destination.

 

Cafeteria Students are to report to their assigned lunch table by class.  Students who wait in line to buy lunch should do so quietly.  Students who fail to show appropriate lunch behavior will be moved to the silent lunch table; students at this table are not allowed to talk during lunch.  Each table will be released to the school yard as a table when they are quiet and their eating area is clean.  In the cafeteria (inside or outside tables), students are expected to:

 

·          Eat their lunch;

·          Speak in quiet voices;

·          Refrain from horseplay and yelling;

·          Refrain from trading or throwing food;

·          Refrain from feeding animals (birds, squirrels, etc.);

·          Pick up what you drop.

 

Rainy Day Lunch When it is raining, students should do the following:

·          Bring something quiet to do (book to read, paper to draw or puzzle on, etc.)

·          Students are expected to speak in low, quiet voices due to the large number of students in the cafeteria on rainy days.

·          After eating, students will be dismissed to stations (may vary); write or draw (remain at tables); read (in the library); video (on stage); board games (kitchen end of the cafeteria).

 

Assemblies Students in assemblies are expected to be on their very best behavior.  Students are to refrain from talking with neighbors.  The Patterson Quiet Sign is a raised hand.  When students see an adult raise his or her hand, everyone is to stop talking immediately and raise his or her hand as well.  After assemblies, students are to remain quiet.  Teachers will tell their class when to stand and exit the multi-purpose room.  Students are expected to enter and leave quietly and calmly.

 

Playground Students are to show calm and cooperative behavior on the playground.

Yard duty monitors are on duty to supervise play.  Students are to comply with the requests first time given or will be sent to the office.

 

·          Use the playground equipment safely and properly.

·          Games which simulate fighting, hitting, or weapons are not permitted.

·          Toys and other items from home are not to be brought onto the playground.  Students may bring balls from home with permission from their teacher.  The school is not responsible for any items brought from home.

·          All students should remain on the playground or sit at the blue tables if they want to talk.

·          Student conflict managers are there to help.  They are to be listened to and treated with respect.  Working with a conflict manager means a problem can be resolved before it gets out of hand.

·          Students may be assigned White Paw for breaking classroom or playground rules.  White Paw will be for the entire recess period.

·          Students may be assigned other consequences during recess period by their teacher for failure to turn in homework (such as time out in their own or another classroom).

·          When the bell rings, or a whistle blows, all students are to freeze.

 

 

CLASSROOM RULES

Each teacher has classroom rules and consequences posted in the classroom so all children know what is expected of them.  Students are expected to comply with classroom rules at all times.  Each teacher will send home a copy of the classroom rules and consequences within the first two weeks of school.

 

SCHOOL WIDE RULES

All children are expected to comply with school rules at all times in the classroom, before school, at recess and lunch, on field trips, and after school while still on school grounds.

 

                The Big 5:

                Treat others and their property with respect.

                Listen and follow directions the first time.

                Do not argue or fight.  Solve problems by talking them out.

                Be prepared.  Complete class and homework as assigned.

                Be a good citizen of our school community by taking care of our school and each other.

 

CONSEQUENCES

At Patterson, we believe that all children can work cooperatively to create a positive environment for learning.  Students who choose to break a school rule receive consequences.  School wide consequences are as follows:

 

Step 1 Verbal Warning

Step 2 Loss of recess (White Paw for behavior), silent lunch or loss of other privilege.

Step 3 Time out for specific times to reflect and refocus.

Step 4 Teacher call to parent.  Possible restitution (making it right) or loss of privilege.

Step 5 Extended time-out in another classroom with work assignments.

Step 6 Referral to the office.  Student may be assigned to complete Making Choices form.  Consequences will be determined based on the offence and may include detention, in-school suspension, out-of-school suspension, expulsion, or other consequences based on the offense.

 

Students may be referred to the office at any time for fighting on school grounds; overt subordination; or possession of dangerous items.
